Meditation for Brain Health
Here are several reasons to practice meditation to support your brain.
Hello Yogolder’s. Studies from: John Hopkins, University of Massachusetts, Stanford, UCLA, & Yale report that meditation helps relieve our subjective levels of anxiety and depression, improve attention, concentration, and overall psychological well-being.
Meditation helps preserve the aging brain according to UCLA. This is due to grey matter volume throughout your brain. Grey matter volume is essential for controlling emotion, memory, and movement and plays a significant role in your human functions.
1. An interesting study from Yale found that mindfulness meditation decreases activity in the default mode network (DMN). This is the brains network responsible for mind-wandering and self-referential thoughts. The DMN is active when we’re not thinking about anything in general, when our minds are just wandering from thought to thought. Mind-wandering is typically associated with being less happy. Studies have shown that meditation helps quiet the effect on the DMN.
2. A John Hopkins study revealed the relationship between mindfulness meditation and its ability to help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. They believe meditation is the active form of brain training.
3. The University of Massachusetts’ Center and Stanford aims to reduce a person’s physical, mental, and stress level through meditation. They found that mindful meditation may be reduced by breath only. Mindfulness meditation has also helped people with social anxiety disorder.
