Four Destressing and Peaceful Yoga Poses for after the Holidays

Begin by sitting in your favorite yoga position and start your three circles each way nice and wide.

As you know, holidays are often seen as a time of stress rather than tranquility, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Practicing holiday yoga provides destressing from the holiday season. It’s often during these times that we end up doing more, pushing ourselves harder, reaching all our deadlines. What we really need to do is slow down now and acknowledge that we are finished with the holidays. It’s over.  Happy New Year! Take a deep breath and let’s begin to decompress.

Here are 4 yoga poses for destressing and peace.

Easy Seated Twist Pose - From your easy seated pose, reach your right hand and take hold of your left knee. Reach your left fingertips to the ground behind your low back. Focus on a slow breath and lengthen your spine. Repeat on the other side.

Easy Seated Heart Opener - With your legs stretched out in front of you and you sitting on your bum, reach your fingertips to the ground behind you, about 6-8 inches. Draw your shoulders back, opening your heart center. If it feels okay for the neck and spine, drop your head back and look up towards the sky relaxing your face. Take 5-10 deep breaths focusing on your heart.

Easy Reclining Twist - Laying on your back, draw your knees up to your chest. Gently let both knees relax to one side. As you stretch your arms out wide on each side, turn your head towards the opposite side that you placed your knees. Allow gravity to do the work for you. Relax as the spine gently unfolds. Take 5-10 breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Childs Pose— From all fours, draw your big toes together and separate your knees a little wider than hips-width apart. Shift your sit bones back towards your heels and melt your upper body down, allowing your head to contact the ground or a block. Relax your arms either out in front of you or along your sides. Breathe slowly and deeply for at least one minute.
