Yoga Poses for Neck Tension
There are several reasons why yoga may be beneficial for relieving neck tension or pain. For starters, yoga may help to stretch and strengthen the muscles in the neck. Yoga may also help to relieve tension and stiffness in the neck muscles. Additionally, yoga may help to improve flexibility and balance. For all these reasons, yoga can help you to move more easily and with less pain. Additionally, yoga is a form of mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation may help you to focus on your breath and relax your mind and body.
The combination of flexibility, stretching, strengthening, and mindfulness makes yoga an ideal action for neck tension and pain. In fact, many people find that they no longer need medication or other treatments once they start practicing yoga regularly.
Here are my favorite and always remember to consult your physician.
Puppy Pose
The Puppy Pose is a wonderful pose for stretching the muscles in the neck and upper back. To begin this pose, start on all fours with your hands directly below your shoulders and your knees directly below your hips. Like child’s pose, now stretch your arms forward on the mat and press your hips up and back arching your spine placing your hips and bum up in the air. Keep your head down between your arms while melting your chest down as far as possible to the ground and hold for five breaths.
Cat-Cow Pose
The Cat-Cow Pose is another great pose for stretching the muscles in the neck and upper back. To perform this pose, start on all fours with your hands directly below your shoulders and your knees directly below your hips. Inhale as you arch your spine, look up toward the ceiling, and lift your chest. Exhale as you round your spine, draw in your stomach, and look down towards your mat. Repeat this movement several times with each breath.
Thread the Needle Pose
Begin this pose on all fours. Extend one arm and stretch it beneath your body as you lower down to rest on the shoulder. Hold for several seconds. You’ll look as if you are in a modified puppy pose. Repeat on the other side.
Child’s Pose
The Child’s Pose is a great pose for relaxing the muscles in the neck and shoulders. To perform this pose, start on all fours with your hands directly below your shoulders and your knees directly below your hips. Sit back on your heels and extend your arms forward to rest them on the floor. Hold for five breaths.
Always remember to like, follow, and share to support others.
