Beginning Yoga Poses to Support Lupus

Yoga can be a great therapy for people who have lupus. Lupus causes inflammation and may affect many different body systems including skin, kidneys, joints, brain, lungs and heart. This practice can assist with flexibility, stress, and your overall well-being. I like Restorative or Hatha for this auto-immune disease. These practices provide slow movements for sore joints.

Here are some of my favorite recommendations:

Easy Sitting Pose – Sit on your bum with your legs crossed comfortably. I like to have my hands in prayers pose which is pressing your palms together at your heart’s center. Remember to breathe and enjoy this comfortable pose.

Supported Leg Up Chair Pose - Retrieve your chair and place it on or near your mat. Start in a sitting position with a hip close to the leg of your chair. Using your hands, lean back and lift your legs gently and turn slightly placing your legs on the chair. Make sure your head is supported if needed and open your arms to your sides with your palms facing the sky. You can hold this pose for several minutes.

Wonderful. To get off your chair, use your hands for support and turn your body and remove your legs back to your starting position. Slowly get up and return your chair off your mat.

Recline Spinal Twist Pose – Get in a sitting position and lie on your back. Bend your left knee up supported with your right hand and cross it over to your right leg (near your inner knee). Use your right hand to press gently down on your knee. Use a block if you wish for support. And stretch your left arm to your side and look to your left for added stretch. You can hold this pose for several minutes. Remember to switch sides. Keep your breath smooth and deep.

Child’s Pose - Kneel and sit on your heels gently. Make sure your big toes are touching each other. Spread your knees. Lean forward stretching your back and place your forehead on a blanket or block with your arms extended up on your mat or at your side or resting towards your back with your palms facing up. Hold for five to ten minutes.

Always remember to like, follow, and share to support others.
