What is Salt?

What is salt?

Salt is a mineral that is made from elements of sodium and chlorine. Together they form a crystal called sodium chloride. Most of the salt produced comes from salt mines and evaporated seawater.

Both sodium and chloride are essential elements that help us maintain our balance, circulation, and blood sugar level. Sodium is an electrolyte and a mineral.

Many salts that we consume daily are iodized. Iodine is added to many refined salts to help consumers meet their nutritional daily requirements. Iodine is a trace mineral commonly found in seafood, dairy products, eggs, and grains. People use salt for taste and to reduce iodine deficiency.

4 Common Types of Salt.

Table salt – is a fine, granulated salt which we use for cooking and sprinkling on our foods for taste.

Kosher salt – is a flakey salt. It adds a crunchy taste to dishes and drinks. The size of the crystal is perfect for bringing out moisture in blood from meats, which is the koshering process.

Sea Salt – is produced from evaporated seawater and is in the form of large crystals or fine grains. Examples of Sea Salt are: Black Sea, Hawaiian, Celtic, and French.

Himalayan Salt - I find Himalayan salt to be the healthiest for you and my favorite. It has 84 essential trace elements that your body needs to function. It is also known to stable blood sugar levels, aid in digestion, minimize muscle cramps, and help balance the pH levels in your body.

Himalayan pink salt is mined in Khewra, Pakistan, Maras, Peru, and in the Andes mountains (Andean pink salt is lighter in color and has similar mineral properties.)

Remember that salt is mainly used to add flavor to your foods. I love to add this salt to my meals to add a savory flavor. However, be sure to maintain your salt intake especially if you have high blood pressure. Always consult your doctor on the use and amount of your daily salt intake.

Enjoy and remember… WE are Limitless
